The Logos – July 2025

Faith, Freedom, and Fellowship

Reflecting on Freedom with Pastor Dave

As July approaches, many of us find ourselves humming familiar patriotic tunes and reflecting on what it means to live in a free country. Pastor Dave invites us to take this reflection deeper – what does freedom mean for those who follow Christ?

Drawing from Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he reminds us:

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1

Rather than seeing freedom as simply the right to do whatever we want, Paul urges us to consider how Christian freedom empowers us to serve one another in love. It’s not about self-indulgence, but about compassion and community. As Pastor Dave puts it, we are free for something, not just free from something.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, he offers a powerful reminder:

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

This Independence Day, may we reflect not only on our country’s freedom, but also on how we are called to use our freedom in Christ to lift one another up.

Chaplain’s Corner: Prayers for the Journey

Chaplain Phil shares how meaningful written prayers have been for readers of The LOGOS – some even passing them along to others in need. This month, he offers several thoughtful prayers that can serve as quiet companions for your spiritual journey or as encouragements to share:

  • “Eternal God, I pray that I will make a difference in someone’s life today. May I truly be a friend in both my words and my actions. Amen”
  • “Help me, Lord, to choose to gracefully accept changes in my life…”
  • “Holy Father, teach me how to be a good listener…”

Whether you’re seeking strength, joy, patience, or perspective, these gentle words offer comfort and clarity.

Worship & Building Updates

Our June 29th worship service is now available on YouTube and features a thoughtful message from Pastor Dave alongside inspiring music from the AHPC Choir.

In other church news, the June Session Meeting included an exciting progress report on facility improvements made since the beginning of 2025. Photos are featured in the newsletter, and a full summary will be included in August’s edition of The LOGOS.

As Corrie Ten Boom reminds us,

“If a care is too small to be turned into a prayer, it is too small to be made into a burden.”

Fellowship Highlights

Mark Your Calendar: Teacher Dedication & Luncheon

Sunday, August 3rd, AHPC will host a Teacher Dedication Service in partnership with Alamo Heights Presbyterian Day School, followed by a “Cool & Refreshing” themed fellowship luncheon. Be on the lookout for reservation forms in the July bulletins!

Youth Achievements: Rockets to Remember

AHPC youth members Sophia Lathrop and Andrew Lindner recently traveled to White Sands Missile Range as part of the Alamo Heights High School rocket team. Their team, one of just four selected nationwide, was the only one to successfully launch!

Sophia served as Project Manager, while Andrew led as Chief Engineer. You can catch video highlights of the launch and interviews on the White Sands Missile Range social channels. Well done, students!

Missions & Outreach

On June 9, Khalid and Saliha’s family officially closed on their new home—a Habitat for Humanity build that AHPC helped sponsor. This joyful milestone is a testament to what our church family can accomplish together. Congratulations to the new homeowners!

Day School Spotlight: Doughnuts for Dads

On June 13, our Fellowship Hall was filled with joy as dads and granddads joined the children of our Day School for morning chapel and sweet treats. Songs celebrating dads were followed by—of course—plenty of doughnuts. Thanks to everyone who made this Father’s Day tradition a meaningful moment for all!

Youth Ministry Updates

AHPC Youth continues to stay active this summer, gathering on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings for fellowship, Bible study, and fun.

Recent events included:

  • May 28 – “Hello Summer / Congrats Grads” at Main Event with bowling and laser tag
  • June 11 – “AHPC Late Night” with games and treats at the church

The group recently began exploring two new studies:

  • Jesus’ Most Popular Parables by Kenny Beck
  • Parables: The Mysteries of God’s Kingdom by John MacArthur

As always, attendance varies in the summer with travel, but our youth leaders continue to engage and encourage connection all season long.

Final Blessings

Whether you’re attending parades, traveling, or simply enjoying a quiet Fourth of July, remember this: you are free in Christ to love boldly, serve generously, and reflect God’s grace in the world around you.

We look forward to seeing you in worship soon. Until then – stay safe, stay cool, and stay connected.

Blessings,
